"I know there is a plan that the Vice-President, Prof.Yemi Osibanjo would start town hall meetings in zones. It would then be broken down to states and so on." "Government realised that there is a need to take information to the people and there are steps that
are being taken in order to ensure that is done ", were the words of the Presidential Special Special Assistant on Media, Garba Shehu.
While the above statement might seem nice and well thought , it smacks of foolishness to say the least , if properly analysed. How can a government who won elections with a "Change" propaganda, having made more than 100 campaign promises which even includes increasing the worth of the Naira (local currency) to the extent it exchanges for $1, now require town hall meetings to direct it's course? Immediately after assuming office, it denied the promises made and termed them lies. What is funny is that the government which has not delivered on basic things like power supply, repair of death trap termed roads, provision of employment; now suddenly want to interact with the people and know what they desire?
What else can they people desire, when more than 20,000 people have lost their jobs since this administration was sworn in into office as a result of the gradual economic regression? What else will the people desire, when fuel is still scarce and one has to stand in the fuel station all day and night to get the opportunity of buying even a litre? For the first time in more than a decade , fuel scarcity has lasted more than a few days (now more than 12 weeks) and according to the Minister of State for Petroleum , it will only get worse until May.
Has the administration suddenly forgotten their campaign propaganda and hence desperately need town hall meetings to remind them ? Or is it a plan to excessively loot the treasury, as funds that would be appropriated for these meetings would be easily diverted ? A good leader does not require town hall meetings to function effectively as he already knows what his people desire. President Buhari and his Vice, Prof Osibanjo have clearly lost it and are out of ideas . In ten months in power they have only increased the pains of the people and succeeded in making the country worse than they met it.
At this point, the town hall meeting plans further exposes their shallow thinking as it is clear to Nigerians the present government is a confused one .
