"What happens in our unwritten protocol in Nigeria is that, in event of major security problems, it is the president that summons a governor or calls him on phone to sympathise and seek additional information where necessary to assure or
discuss aspects that require Federal intervention." "Governors don't rush to the Villa during emergencies, they remain in their respective States to provide leadership in their respective states", these were the words of governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State on why he refused to call and brief the then president Dr. Goodluck Jonathan after the Chibok kidnap of over 200 school girls on 14 April 2014.
While the actions of the then President after the kidnap wasn't what was expected of him as it took him more than two weeks to act on the matter. The statement of Shettima smacks of ignorance and naivety . How could the governor refuse to call the president while his state was burning? What if his his children were among those kidnapped , could he have kept mute as he did? Even though Borno State was under a State of Emergency and hence had many high ranking security officers in the State, courtesy still demands that Shettima calls the president officially to inform and brief him on events.
It is a known fact that the governor is the "Chief Security" officer of a state and must be held responsible in any insecurity event in the state. On what grounds would the governor receive all the "Security Votes" yet decline to take security responsibility in his state. Would the governor say the same if he was a Managing- Director in a firm and the firm's headquarters is under attack and the staff kidnapped? Could Shettima as the Managing -Director say he would not call the Firm's Chairman or owner, simply because the office complex's security men are there to brief the Chairman?
The statement made by the governor is not an excuse whatsoever as he has shown he is immature and lacks the qualities needed foro the position he currently occupies. Rather the recent statement clearly fuels the conspiracy theory which alleges that the Chibok kidnap might be politically planned and motivated as the statement of the governors is familiar to one who withheld vital information from the president for an ulterior motive . Shettima might have unconsciously admitted to being part of the plans to abduct the girls to unsettle the then PDP government in an effort to throw stones at the person of the former president.
Also to be mentioned is the argument as to the reason the Chibok school wasn't closed down despite the alarm over insecurity in the village. The governor did not obey security instructions by closing down the school nor did he call the president to brief him of the infamous event but now turns back to attack the then Federal Government for the flaws of the ugly event.
With the girls yet to be rescued by the incumbent government and that of Shettima's "Change" political party , Governor Kashim Shettima has clearly shown that he knows more than he makes us believe by his recent statement .
