President Buhari's Continued Silence On Agatu Killings.

"In my 20 years of working as a humanitarian , I have never seen such a level of destruction. If steps are not taken, the crisis can affect the country as a whole ", were the words of Mrs. Angele Dikongue Atangana
(Representative Of the United Nations High Commissioner For Refugees to Nigeria and Economic Community of West African States), on the state of Agatu after the attack of the area by suspected Fulani militia.

The massacre in Agatu has resulted in more than 300 deaths and displacement of thousands. The problem at hand isn't about the attack but on the perceived lack of interest by the president on behalf of  the victims of the attack.

The president's only action has been his condolence message to the victims,  while the police is yet to make any arrest more than one month after the infamous incident . The irony of it all is that the President and his party condemned and criticised former president Goodluck Jonathan for his failure to visit the parents of the kidnapped Chibok girls in 2014, yet at present the President (Muhammadu Buhari) has refused to visit the  Agatu victims to sympathise with them rather choosing to travel more than nine hours to the U.S for the World Security  Meeting last week.

To buttress further, it is the same president who ordered the arrest of 76 Enugu state indigenes who took up arms to defend their territory from the same Fulani herdsmen. Why has the president kept mute in the Agatu attack when he is the same brain behind the arrest and killing of innocent, unharmed Republic of Biafra protester's .

The gift of a few bags of rice and little financial resources to the victims by the wife of the Vice-President is not the solution. Neither is it the statement by the president's media aide, Mr. Femi Adesina that the president doesn't need to visit the victims and also further calling his critics "Wailing  Wailers". This shows a government that has zero tolerance for even constructive criticism.

While the other Nigerian's have refused to condemn the president's silence over the Agatu Massacre , we should be reminded that while it is Agatu today, it might happen to our own villages tomorrow , if we don't stand up to this ugly trend by Fulani Herdsmen that has been in existence for years.
