Everton might have underachieved all these years and cannot be classified as a European heavyweight but gradually the club is making a steady progress to the top. It all started with the sale of the club's 49% shares to Iranian billionaire Moshiri Fah'd to the appointment of Ronald Koeman as coach after his impressive work in Southampton and now the appointment of Leicester City's Chief
scout Steve Walsh as the club's Football Director.
Walsh is the coach credited with the scouting and signing of both N'Golo Kante and Riyad Mahrez from Ligue 1 clubs Caen and Le Havre at knock-down prices all below £5 million before these players blossomed to world beaters in Leicester.
"I'm proud and privilege to become director of football at such a fantastic and historic club. With a new manager and a new major shareholder, it feels very much like a new era here at Everton and that potential is what is most exciting," Walsh said on his unveiling .
The 51-year-old first made his name in Chelsea while working as Jose Mourinho's scout before his stock blossom into what it is as of today. Walsh weighs him targets properly with much emphasis on their character, background habits and traits . This is the reason most of his Leicester signings are players who had faced a serious adversity in their careers with the likes of Anthony Knockaert and Jamie Vardy an evidence of his recruitment policy .
After joining Leicester while the club was in League One, Walsh is credited with recruiting more than 32 players, overhauling the team as the Midland club climbed up from League One to the Football League and then the Premier League before winning the League for the first time in their football history last season.
Walsh is also credited with the signing of both Michael Essein and Didier Drogba for Chelsea during his time as Jose Mourinho's chief scout though he has always downplayed his role in their signing which is not surprising considering his modest and seismic nature.
Leicester might have lost midfield star N'golo Kante to Chelsea for £30 million but that will not hurt compared to the loss of Walsh to Everton who have made the club's best signing of the season by his appointment which judging by his records will only take them closer to the top. Leicester's loss can be said to be Everton's gain considering the appointment of the 51-year-old by Everton on Thursday.
