Is Jurgen Klopp Right In Signing Newcastle's Georgino Wijnaldum For £23 Million?

By Ewah Chika.

Liverpool seems undone in the transfer window after signing the likes of Sadio Mane and Joel Matip this summer. The Anfield side who were once linked with Borussia Dortmund new signing but have now suddenly signed former Newcastle attacking midfielder Georgino Wjinaldum for £23million which is £1 million more than what Dortmund paid Bayern for Mario Gotze on Thursday.

"I'm really excited because Liverpool is a big club with a great history and it's always a dream to play for as big a club as Liverpool," Wijnaldum told Liverpool's club website.

At 25, Wjinaldum is a former captain of PSV having played and won the  Dutch Eredivisie title in 2015 before his move to Newcastle United last season for £14.5 million. The player scored 11 goals with five assists in 38 league games last season in an overachieving Newcastle side that ended up being relegated. Wjinaldum was Newcastle's shinning star alongside Andros Townsend and Moussa Sissoko though their efforts  weren't  still enough to save Rafa Benitez's side. Wijnaldum's stand out matches last season was the home wins against Liverpool, Norwich where he ended the game with four goals and the final season game against Tottenham after Newcastle relegation had been confirmed. The attacker has an abundance of attacking qualifies with his strong and quick runs into the box from deep the hallmark of them all. Wijnaldum will also add another dimension to Liverpool's game as he loves attacking behind opposing defenders and equally good in the air. Wijnaldum's best position is slightly behind the main striker in a 4-2-3-1 formation (No.10), although he can also play in any attacking position but with little successes as he did last season with Newcastle.

The Dutch man is highly experienced after playing over 210 Eredivisie games for both Feyenoord and PSV with an impressive  64 goals and also 30 games for the Netherlands scoring six goals. Wijnaldum is also a winner having won the KNVB Cup twice with both Feyenoord and PSV.

The Dutch man's major flaw is his inability to perform away from home as was the case last season in Newcastle. Wijnaldum was also unable to perform after the turn of the year, going missing in most games as well as sulking at not being allowed to play in his favourite No.10 position. The midfielder is also poor In tackling and hardly contributes defensively for his team which will be a problem for Jurgen Klopp who plays a high energy pressing game. At £25 million, Wijnaldum is an expensive signing considering on present form he is not an upgrade on the likes of Roberto Firmino, Philipe Coutinho and Sadio Mane which raises questions on his signing.
