At 28, while many footballers are winding down, new Inter Milan deep playing midfielder appears to be hitting his top form after having a troubled and controversial career which saw him flop in Valencia in 2008.
What is shocking however is the fact that Eva Benega found his lost form in Andalusian club Sevilla and not in very top European clubs. Last season, the Argentine won the Europa League and also reached
the final of the Copa del Rey before losing to Barcelona in injury time. Banega scord five goals and provided two assists in La Liga as Sevilla finished outside the European qualification position. Under Unai Emery in Sevilla, Banega has flourished as he is partnered by French man Steven Nzonzi who is the more defensive of the pair. The Argentine is tasked with building up play from the back and supplying the attackers with key passes (long and short ranged). Though he is player that isn't blessed with pace or energy, Banega makes up for that with his vision, dribbling, ability to play in tight spaces and long range shots . The former Boca Juniors playmaker can also play key passes in a split second with little of no time for defenders to recover and is a bargain after signing for Inter on the free.
At Inter, Banega will play alongside Geoffrey Kondogbia or Felipe Mello in the centre of midfield in a 4-3-3 formation with Ivan Perisic and Brozovic supporting Mauro Icardi in the wings. The Argentine will compliment either Melo or Kondogbia's physicality, energy and drive with his vision and ability to retain possession as Inter struggled with goals all through last season. This position will allow him play further up the pitch with little defensive duty to do, giving him the time to create goal scoring chances for star man and compatriot Icardi.
Banega is the ideal player for Inter, and will help ease the pain caused by the exit of Wesley Sneijder who played the role perfectly during his time at the club. The Argentine is also an upgrade on Kovacic who was unable to perform at a consistent level before he was sold to Real Madrid last summer.
Though the season is still far, the signing of Ever Banega from Sevilla represents the right step for Inter.
