Can Alvaro Negredo Help Middlesbrough Avoid The Drop This Season?

By Ewah Chika.

Alvaro Negredo Sanchez might have flopped during his time in Manchester City considering he only scored one league goal from January 2014 to the end of the season in May (ended that season with nine goals in 32 Premier League games) but that has not dissuaded Aitor Karanka and Middlesbrough from signing him on a season long loan on Wednesday.

This is coming after the Spanish striker who has scored 10 goals from 21 games for the Spanish national team travelled 400 miles by car with his representatives to close the deal. Negredo is a gamble although wise one given his inconsistent records in Valencia where he has scored only five goals in 25 La Liga games since signing for €27 million from Manchester City on a permanent basis in 2015 after playing for a season on loan .

Negredo might have passed his peak considering his advanced age of 30, but Middlesbrough at this point in time need not just a proven striker but one with top flight experience of which only few can boast of judging by the number of trophies the Madrid born player has won which includes the Spanish Copa del Rey ( Sevilla), English Premier League , League Cup (all with Manchester City) and the UEFA European Championship (Spain). Negredo will not find it difficult to adapt in Middlesbrough as his Spanish Madrid roots will help him integrate with Aitor Karanka who also is a Real Madrid legend. It is unfair to judge the striker solely on his records in Valencia as the poor performance of Los Che isn't just one player's fault considering the whole team under-performed last season. Negredo will be a success in Middlesbrough as communication will not be a problem and also given his record of shining in a below or average team with little or no pressure as shown by his 32 goals in 70 La Liga games for Almeira and also 70 goals in 139 La Liga games for Sevilla compared to his performance in top teams like Manchester City and Valencia.

Middlesbrough have already signed nine players which is nothing  compared to the eleven signed by Watford last summer. The signing of Negredo is one that might go down as a big blunder or wise decision at the end of the season but judging by the player's pattern of game which suits teams that play physical and counter attacking football then it is sure to end in a fairytale. This is because the striker is one whose finishing and aerial ability is impeccable coupled with the fact that he loves to play long and through balls to set up team mates. In football nothing is surely certain but it is tempting to say that Middlesbrough have made the right move in signing the former Real Madrid striker this summer.
