Why The Military Flogging Of Hundreds Of Ethiope East Women Should Be Loudly Condemned.

Cimmeta Sagan once said that , "Silence in the face of injustice is a complicity with the oppressor ". It is based on this that the recent happening in Ovre-Eku community in Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta
State should be condemned. This is the reason every rational human being should condemn the flogging and beating of hundreds of  innocent unarmed women by the Nigerian Military troops of the 4th Brigard Command Benin-City under the supervision of Lt. Col. E. D Oworobo.

The women were protesting over a disputed land that borders Edo and Delta States which has already been claimed by PRESCO Oil Company. It is a common knowledge that peaceful protests are the fundamental human right of any citizen whenever they feel that certain policies adversely affects them , in order to bring the issue to the attrntion of the public , NGO, media firms , international community or their national government.

This is the main reason why the excuse given by the Army Chief (Oworobo) that his troops flogged the protesting women because they attempted to disarm his troops is more than laughable. One has to ask the question of, how unarmed women who are of a weaker sex could foolishly attempt and successful disarm armed soldiers with all sorts of guns and ammunitions. Why weren't other means employed to disperse the protesters and why was the use of force employed.

This is not different from the everyday events in Nigeria from road patrol to market to bus stops where the police and military officers who are employed and paid to protect this same innocent citizens turn back to unleash terror and mayhem on them.

Hundreds of these beaten women have children and husbands at home and unfortunately they will do that with varying degrees of bodily injuries or wounds. This clearly shows how human rights in this part of the world has worsened . Why is the military head content on giving excuses instead of apologising ? .

Surely the mentality of all Nigerians has to change as we cannot continue to condone every unprofessional treatment given to us by our superiors. Things really have to change so we can get over activities of this ugly nature.
