It was fun excitement and jubilation when the APC of President Buhari promised to make a monthly payment of N5000 to every unemployed individual when they assume office. While Nigerians knew this was pure propaganda and almost impossible it still did not deter them to believe such bogus lie.
Fast forward to 2016 and after eight months of being in power the Minister of State for Labour and Employment Mr James Ocholi has come to reveal why such promise is not realisable . One only has to decipher the rationale for the payment of the unemployed in Nigeria of today. This is a country that cannot even boast of 10 hours steady power supply, hence many industries and firms packed up and left the country for other lesser African countries . How can a government instead of creating jobs be focussed on paying of unemployed. Why can't such funds be invested in creating of jobs to absorb the already bloated labour market . This is a country that has no data base whatsoever and which even an ordinary birth certificate isn't registered in any data base as individuals can easily change birth certificates at will by swearing a court affidavit and obtaining any year of birth of choice to choose their sinister desires.
Nigerians should instead focus on chiding the new government why there are no efforts to create jobs and why it is treating such important matter with a carefree attitude . Will N5000 suddenly feed an unemployed or pay his bills ? Considering what happened to the SURE-P fund, who will be in-charge of the disbursement and how accurate can they be to actually capture the unemployed ? Won't it be the same politicians who will be be charged with the disbursement ? A country that still struggles to overcome the menace of ghost workers should not dare to dream of such payment . This will only create more problems than solution . Even the government of President Buhari knew from inception that this promise is a mirage yet he used it to gain votes and still continues to deny the obvious . Unemployed should be trained and well funded, while the Nigerian environment should be sanitised to attract and make the country conductive for Foreign Direct Investment. Let us face reality and stop this self deceit.
