While football fans are celebrating the return of La Liga after the christmas break, the same cannot be said of coach Rafeal Benitez who saw his leave to remain as Real Madrid coached terminated by President Florentino Perez on January 4 2016
.This is not surprising to say the least, as it was clear from even to the most optimistic fan that Benitez was a round peg in a square hole.
History shows that Benitez last claimed a league title in 2004 and has highly disappointed with both Napoli and Inter , when he had one of the best players to choose from. While his success at both Chelsea (Europa League and Top 4 finish) and Liverpool (Champions League and FA Cup) cannot be disputed, one only has to look at the new form of Los Blancos to understand the reasons behind his sacking.
Benitez's team sit third in the league, four points behind fierce city rivals Athletico Madrid who have a far less budget. In all his big games this season both in La Liga and Champions League which includes Villareal, Barcelona(4-0 loss), Sevilla, Athletico Madrid, PSG and now Valencia, Benitez has only won once against PSG in the first leg and then lost thrice. This surely doesn't offer much optimism even for the most optimistic fan. Few weeks before he was appointed by Perez, Benitez was rumoured to be on his way to West Ham which shows how low his stock has gone. His cold approach to players also at Real has not helped matters as the dressing room is seen divided , making senior players like Karim Benzema, Christiano Ronaldo and Isco all feeling alienated.
Real Madrid was clearly a club too high for Benitez at this time of his career and he proved it. It only took forty-two days from the day Fiorention Perez gave him a public backing for his sacking to be effected. The sacking was only a matter of time as Benitez was sitting on a time bomb. Rafeal Benitez was simply not good enough.
