Has Liverpool Got One Over Manchester United With Clyne Capture?

Towards the end of last season one defender was synonymous with Manchester United and that was Southampton's right back Nathaniel Clyne. Since the retirement of Gary Neville , United have not had a permanent replacement.
They have experimented with the likes of  Antonio Valencia (Equador), Chris Smalling (England), Phil Jones (England) and Brazilian Rafael all to no avail. It got so bad that Valencia usually a right winger played right back all season.

It was clear right back was a priority for United during the summer transfer. Funny enough Clyne only got his preferred right back position when Southampton sold their first choice right back Calum Chambers to Arsenal before the beginning of last season. It was only after the sale of Chambers that Clyne got his time to shine and he did not disappoint. Clyne joined Southampton from Crystal Palace in the 2012/2013 season. Last season he played 35 League matches scoring two goals in the process. He had a shot accuracy of 36% with an average pass length of 18m and pass accuracy of 78%. Even with the height of 1.75m and weight of 67kg, he still won 48% of average duels .

At 24 years of age, Clyne comes with a massive potential of resale value and his work ethics and discipline (Four yellow cards and no red). With Liverpool financially  no match for Manchester United and with the lure of the Champions League, it was a suprise that Liverpool got him over United. Liverpool on their part are short on a right after the steady decline of Glen Johnson. However Javier Manquillo 21, was signed from Athletico Madrid on a two year loan to compete with Johnson but it has soon been discovered he is short of the quality required at the top level for a club like Liverpool. Turkish Emre Can (Central Midfielder) had to play right most of the season.

What isn't clear is if Clyne's agent used the lure of Manchester to increase his clients wages and  transfer fee. With Clyne,  Rodgers could go to bed and be assured he has acquired that one player that eluded him. Manchester United beat Liverpool twice last season in the league but with the capture of Clyne  , Liverpool have gotten one over them before the season commences . It's been a busy transfer with the likes of stars like Danny Ings, Firmino. Come end of the season Rodgers has not excuse for not succeeding.
