Champions League 2016/2017 Analysis: Group C, Why Barcelona Failed Against Manchester City

Champions League 2016/2017 Analysis: Group C,  Why Barcelona Failed Against Manchester City.

By Ewah Chika.

For 40 minutes Luis Enrique's Barcelona dominated proceedings away at the Etihad Stadium last night against Pep Guardiola's Manchester City in the Champions League even though Barcelona were a goal ahead. After humiliating City 4-0 in Camp Nou, it looked like the same scoreline will be repeated as Barcelona enjoyed as much as 75% of possession in addition to Lionel Messi's sublime opener making it his 14th goal in 16 games against English clubs.

Manchester City will go into tonight's game with a big point to prove having gone six games without a win after Barcelona's 4-0 humiliation at the Nou Camp two weeks ago, a run which has become Pep Guardiola's worst career record before the Citizens turned the corner last weekend with the 4-0 spanking of Tony Pulis' West Bromwich Albion.

English Premier League Preview: Chelsea Versus Leicester City (Week 8).

By Ewah Chika.

After the long international break English Premier League fans are more than delighted to see the return of club football this Saturday as Antonie Conte's Chelsea host champions Leicester City in the weekend's early kick-off in a game expected to be full of goals.

Chelsea are struggling of late sitting seventh conceding nine goals in seven games. Recently the Blues have gained just four points from their last four games losing to both Liverpool and Arsenal. Leicester on their part are 12th in the table with a goal difference of -3, losing to the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool. One good news though for Chelsea is that they are unbeaten in their last five home league games against a struggling Leicester City.

Pep Guardiola's Manchester City is one club Ronald Koeman and his troops will do anything to avoid playing at this moment considering Everton are winless in their last three games having won five on the spin before the ugly patch. Everton are also yet to beat Manchester City at the Etihad in their last five attempts which makes it slightly simple for free scoring Manchester City who have scored at least two their last six games.

Tammy Abraham's summer season long loan to Bristol City in the Championship did not generate much views and news as the 18-year-old was an unknown player outside Stamford Bridge having made only two Premier League appearances before the move.

Fast- forward to end of September (less than a month after his move) and the youngster is the bride of the Championship lighting it up with as much as ten goals winning the EEL Player of September. This is despite the fact that the youngster had been so impressively prolific for the Chelsea Youth team scoring an astonishing 74 goals in 98 youth games winning the FA Youth Cup and UEFA Youth League in the process.

Why Oliver Giroud Is Still Important To Arsenal Despite Alexis Sanchez's Rich Early Season Form.

Why Oliver Giroud Is Still Important To Arsenal Despite Alexis Sanchez's Rich Form This Season.

By Ewah Chika.

Arsenal are once again playing impressive football  with the results to match and one of the reason for that is the change in style by manager Arsene Wenger.

This season, Wenger has gone back to the tried and trusted quick and energetic free flowing football in the opponents final third. This was the system, the French man utilised during the glory days with the likes of Dennis Bergkamp, Freddie Ljunberg, Robert Pires, Sylvain Wiltord and Thierry Henry. This style was quickly abandoned for a slow passing style following the exit of the aforementioned players and their replacements with the likes of Oliver Giroud, Gervinho, Mesut Ozil and Danny Welbeck to mention but a few.

Wenger persisted with this new slow system for years even though it yielded only two FA Cup's in 12 years. This season, the Frenchman appears to have realised his mistakes, signing quick and energetic forward Lucas Perez from Deportivo La Caruna  and restoring Alexis Sanchez to his preferred position upfront as the lone striker. Sanchez in return has scored five goals providing two assists in eight games so far in the league. This wasn't the only change as Mesut Ozil has also moved to his favourite No 10 position slightly behind the lone striker (Sanchez) which was formerly Sanchez's position as Giroud played upfront. Such has been the success of this new style that Arsenal white washed Antonie Conte's Chelsea 3-0 outplaying them and making a mockery of the Italian's defence on the day. With Alex Iwobi and Theo Walcott in the wings, Arsenal have played fast paced passing game coupled with the quick thinking required to finish off their opponents. As a result, the attacking players exhibit the fluidity required to beat even the most compact of defences as the attackers interchange positions intermittently making it difficult for defenders to mark them.

Although this system has come with improved results, just like every other football system it failed during the Gunners last league game with Burnley,  a game the North London side needed an injury time hand ball from Laurent Koscielny to win . What this means is that though the quick attacking pattern can win games against attacking teams, the system becomes easier for defensive minded teams. This is because, against teams set-up to play defensively deep, Arsenal attackers are afforded little or no space to operate. As Dyche's Burnley showed, Arsenal attackers are not the type to operate in closed spaces as the likes of Walcott, Ozil and Sanchez need space to flourish.

Based on this, it becomes imperative that Oliver Giroud is not discarded entirely by the club as he thrives in such packed situations considering his impressive lay-off, hold-up play and aerial prowess. Although he isn't dazzling to watch, Giroud has that ability to draw defenders to himself thus freeing up his attacking team mates.

With more than 31 games to go before season end, both of Giroud , Perez and Sanchez must realise none is a guaranteed starter as both have their various roles depending on the opposition.

For now, Arsene Wenger must rally and rotate his squad especially the attackers  in such a way that each player plays to the team's strength as anything less than that will end up an uneventful year for the club and fans alike.

Jose Mourinho, New Country And Club, Injury Or Player: Who Is To Blame For Henrikh Mkhitaryan's Poor Form?

Jose Mourinho, New Club And Country, Injury Or The Player Himself: Who Is To Blame For Henrikh Mkhitaryan's Poor Form For Manchester United?

By Ewah Chika.

Manchester United are blowing hot and cold this season despite spending an excess of £150 million in player signings in the summer. Scoring 13 league goals, keeping two clean sheets , conceding eight goals and sitting fifth in the Premier League table. Such was the excitement and euphoria following the appointment of former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho in the summer that many fans quickly concluded the Premier League title was their's to lose this season.

Fast forward to October and it seems the fans were living in illusion as United have lost against rivals and league leaders Manchester City and against inconsistent Watford at the same time dropping points against Stoke City.  However, even with all these incidents, the most shocking of all is the inability of star signing and Armenian international Henrikh Mkhitaryan to secure a starting berth at the club. Signed for a fee in excess of £25 million with a year to run in his contract with former club Borussia Dortmund, the attacker has failed to replicate his best form in England, as the likes of Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford have been preferred in attack to him. While Rashford has impressed on the wings, the same cannot be said of Lingard who has blown hot and cold.

While struggling with injury, the former Shartkar Donetsk player flopped in his first start against Manchester City as he was substituted in the second half. This is why it might sound foolish to say that the Armenian still remains the best player in the No 10 position for United. The reason for this is due to his vision and ability to play defence splitting passes to the striker. Mkhitaryan also possesses the strength and energy to go physical with opposition defenders who rely on bullying attackers. Unlike Juan Mata who is perfect on the ball but deficient off it, Mkhitaryan has that x-factor which he utilised to great effect at Dortmund last season scoring 15 goals, creating a further 15 assists in the Bundesliga and in all competitions scoring or assisting a total of 49 goals last season, an average of a goal or an assist every 89 minutes. This season, star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic regularly has had to drop deep most times to collect the ball as a result of poor service hence this is where the Armenian comes in handy.

Last season, the former BVB  player's 15 league goals was equal to that of Rooney (six), Mata (five), Martial (four) all combined together. This is coupled with the 67 chances he created which was 19 more than Mata (United's top playmaker), not discounting he had 84 successful take-ons more than Mata.

At present Mkhitaryan might seem an odd player at United considering the
contrasting styles of Thomas Tuchel (BVB  coach) and Jose Mourinho. The Armenian thrives In a team that plays with so much attacking velocity and fluidity, pressing high up the field and forcing opponents to make mistakes which is the reason he was a success under Tuchel unfortunately this is not the same in United where Mourinho utilises a more cautious approach, inviting opponents to attack his team while they rely on the counter attacks . This contrast in style might be to blame for his inability to consistently turn out for the Red Devils and must be corrected before the damage is done .

For now, it seems the Armenian simply has to adapt and stick to Mourinho's style in order to have a happy time in Old Trafford as the likes of Juan Mata learnt the hard way while at Chelsea with Mourinho or seek a move away from the club just like Romelu Lukaku and Kelvin De Bruyne did years ago.

Will The Sacking Of Roberto Di Matteo Halt Aston Villa's Slide?

Will The Sacking Of Roberto Di Matteo Halt Aston Villa's Consistent Slide?

By Ewah Chika.

Having won promotion to the English Premier League with West Bromwich Albion in 2010, Roberto Di Matteo was not a shocking appointment by new Aston Villa owner Dr Tony Xia in the summer. In another way, one could argue Di Matteo's appointment was a step-down for the 46-year-old who won the FA Cup and  Champions League with Chelsea in 2012 but critically looking at the present situation, the Italian has not done much to improve his rating and career since his sacking by Roman Abramovich the same year.

At Villa, Di Matteo signed nine new players with two of them captains of Premier League clubs : Mile Jerdinak (Crystal Palace) and Tommy Elphick (Bournemouth) in addition to the likes of Jonathan Adomah, Aaron Tshibola, James Chester and Ross McCormack spending an excess of £50 million in the process which is very high for a Championship side.

Fast forward to October and the Italian's sacking was made official having been in charge for barely 124 days gaining ten points from 11 games (one win in 12 league games) with Villa languishing in 19th position in the league table. One major consistent problem during the time of the Italian is Villa's inability to wrap up games they dominate, conceding late goals in the 85th, 86th, 87th, 88th and 89th minutes, dropping nine points in total against the likes of Sheffield Wednesday, Huddersfield, Nottingham Forrest, Brentford and Barnsley. Discounting those dropped points, Di Matteo and Villa would have been positioned 7th in the league which is one point  behind rivals Birmingham City (one place behind play-off position).

At certain times, Di Matteo's decision did not help matters as he displayed naivety substituting injured striker McCormack at half-time for defender Jordan Amavi with Villa leading before the equaliser by Brentford.

Another problem is the pathetic performances of the new signings with Jerdinak playing poorly, goalkeeper Peluigi Gollini making costly mistakes and McCormack struggling with injuries.

While the sacking of Di Matteo might seem right, it should be noted that he needed more time to revamp the ailing side who have struggled since the resignation of Martin O'Neil in 2011. Since then Villa have struggled with relegation having Christian Benteke to thank for scoring vital goals that saved them. It is pathetic to know that Villa are yet to win a league game since December 7, 2014 after going a goal behind. The problem in Villa goes beyond the sacking of Di Matteo judging from their form of last season which saw them pick only 17 league points in 38 games. This year, Villa have only three times coupled with their inability to win an away game since August.  The departure of more than 17 players this season did not also help matters as Di Matteo had to build from the scratch. In total six permanent and four caretaker managers have been appointed and sacked in the last six years, dropping from a regular top six club to perennial relegation strugglers.

Owner Xia, might have added to this problem due to his constant interference with technical and tactical issues at the club which reached it's zenith a few weeks before the sacking of Di Matteo.

For now if nothing drastic is done, Aston Villa might soon turn a  to League One club considering their fall from grace to grass.

Ayoze Perez (Newcastle United Forward): Two Years Gone And Yet To Fulfil His Early Promise.

Ayoze Perez (Newcastle United Forward) ; Two Years And Yet To Show The Required Level Of Consistency.

By Ewah Chika.

Once the transfer target of Barcelona and Real Madrid, Ayoze Perez has failed to live up to the billing in Newcastle United as he has found himself more on the sidelines this season.

Under Rafa Benitez, the former Tenerife striker has seen the likes of  Yoan Guaffran and Christian Atsu ranked ahead of him in the pecking order. One thing most Geordie fans can testify is the Spaniard's deft touch, vision, dribbling and ability to create something out of nothing, which is something lacking in the present Newcastle team.

Is Kelvin Gameiro France's Best Striker At The Moment?

Two goals in two starts for France is not a bad record for a striker who couldn't even make Les Blues squad for the European Tournament in the summer despite having an impressive season with Sevilla scoring in the Europa League final, winning the trophy and playing in the Copa del Rey final last season.

Kelvin Gameiro might have felt unlucky having no single call up since Didier Deschamps took over as Laurent Blanc successor in 2012 yet the striker has slowly rebuilt his dwindling  career in Spain allowing his football do the talking for him. At 29, the former Lorient striker appears to be in his peak having flopped when he moved to PSG scoring only 26 goals in 77 years (two years) in Paris with the likes of Nene and Zlatan Ibrahimovic taking the spotlight from him during his time at the club.

Christian Pulisic: Borussia Dortmund And American Best Young Prospect.

By Ewah Chika.

Christian Pulistic might have being an unknown  player when he made the move to Borussia Dortmund from US club side PA Classics in the winter of 2014, yet it took the player only 15 games with the BVD academy to gain promotion to the first team under Jurgen Klopp. While with the BVD academy, Pulisic was so impressive scoring 10 goals and creating eight assists in four months. Since then, the American has broken eight records in all competitions (UEFA Champions League, German Bundesliga and the United States National team-USMNT).

The midfielder has been so dazzling that he has already being compared with world beaters like Eden Hazard, Marco Reus and Phillipe Countinho which is mainly due to his his similar playing style with theirs. The Pennsylvanian born player can also play in any attacking position preferably in the No. 10 position. One of Pulisic's greatest attributes are his pace, low centre of gravity (which allows him to glide and dribble past his markers easily) and his positioning.

Are Chelsea Back To Winning Ways With The New 3-4-3 Formation?

By Ewah Chika.

Antonio Conte might have made his name in the Seria A  after winning Seria A thrice with Juventus despite taking over a poor Juventus from Luigi Delneri in 2011 (Delneri's Juventus finished  seventh a season before Conte came on board).

Conte also performed admirably well with the Azzurri's reaching the quarter-final before losing on penalties to star studded Germany after beating the likes of Belgium and Spain with a less talented Italy squad. Yet all these appear to have changed in a flash after his Chelsea side failed to win three games in a row conceding seven goals and gaining only one point which came against Swansea.

A Quick Profile Of World Class Swiss And Nice Coach Lucien Favre Who Sits Atop The French Ligue 1 Table With A Team Average Age Of 23.

A glance at the French Ligue 1 table will shock the viewer as unheralded Nice are sitting atop the league on 20 points one point ahead of second placed Monaco.

While much of the praise has been to Italian prodigal son Mario Balotteli who seems rejuvenated since joining the club scoring six  goals in five league games, much of the praise should be extended to Swiss coach Lucien Favre  who has turned the Southern French club to giant killers.  Favre has built the team on a limited budget unlike PSG, Monaco and Lyon who have the funds to spend. The former Borussia Mochengladbach coach has gradually evolved the team building on the success of departed French man Claude Puel who left for Southampton in the summer after guiding Nice to a fourth place finish last season.

Indisciplined And Rash, Why David Moyes And Sunderland  Might Regret Not Signing Free Agent Emmanuel Adebayo  This Season.

By Ewah Chika.

Six goals in seven Premier League games is a poor return for any club fighting for Premier League survival, yet that is exactly where David Moyes and Sunderland find themselves presently. The North East club are not only poor in finding the back of the net, they are also a calamity at the back shipping 13 goals so far this season in the league . Though it is difficult to pinpoint whether their problem lie in attack or defence , one glaring thing is the lack of attacking firepower lacking at the club with Jermain Defoe and attacking left-back  Patrick Van Aanholt having scored the club's six  goals so far this season (Defoe on four and Van Aanholt on two).

Bilic's West Ham did not only win big games, after beating the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal, they also played an exciting and entertaining brand of football that wooed neutrals going on to finish sixth in the league.

Insensitive And Senseless, Were Chelsea Wrong To Dispose Legendary Petr Cech For Thibaut Courtois?

Is UEFA's Guaranteed 16 Slots In The Champions League For Top Four Leagues Fair Or Anti-Football?

By Ewah Chika.

UEFA Champions League and Europa League Football seems to be growing every year judging from both sporting and financial aspect with an expected increase in revenue from £2 billion this season to £2.5 billion next season. This might have necessitated the now infamous reforms by UEFA after guaranteeing Champions League Group stage places to the top four leagues which are expected to be Spain, England, Germany and Italy starting from 2018.

Although this looks like fair and decisive decision, considering these leagues account for more than 80% of the revenue UEFA makes from the Champions League due to their large TV markets with Spain and England the main contributors. UEFA did not just stop there as those clubs with historic success in European Competitions will also be rewarded financially due to it's new point formula which gives them an undue advantage over smaller clubs from lesser leagues.

Though this new reform can be said to be fair as clubs from small leagues have continued to falter in the Champions League year in year out with the exception of Sharkar Donesk,

Harry Kane has been the hottest striker in the English top flight in the past two seasons after scoring 21 and 25 league goals in the 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 Premier League seasons. The former Leicester City player repaid Manuel Pochettino's faith in him by scoring 18 goals in his first 20 league goals In the 2014/2015 season after Spurs struggled to score goals,

Is Alexis Sanchez Under-Rated Or On Par With Ronaldo And Messi?

By Ewah Chika.

Alexis Sanchez might not have won the English Premier League or exploded in England as expected following his highly publicised £32 million move from Barcelona in 2014, yet even all these have done little to spoil the Chilean's decent record in England. The attacker is already a crowd favourite after scoring 30 goals in 68 league games for Arsenal which is an improvement on his 39 goals in 88 games for Barcelona.

"I have reached a level where I can compete with great players. I don't feel inferior to anybody. I liken my qualities to Messi and Ronaldo. I have the same abilities as them," were the words of the attacker last week, a statement which has ignited arguments.

While it may look more like Sanchez is trying to blow his trumpet, a look at his attributes, form and stats while in England will help to answer the question if truly he is close to the pair or just under-rated.

Firstly, Sanchez is as fast and skilful as the pair although it may be said that he is stronger and more physical than both judging from his game.  The Chilean is also a better tackler and more suited to a team that plays a high energy pressing game due to his determination and defensive attributes.

Is Eden Hazard Back To His Impervious Form After Sublime Euro's, Pre-Season And August Displays?

By Ewah Chika.

Last season as Chelsea continued to struggle in the Premier League, Eden Hazard struggled with a persistent hip injury becoming shadow of himself and a clog on the wheels of the team even after the change of manager.

This season it appears the Belgian is on his way to reclaiming the PFA Player of the Year he won in 2014/2015 after impressing as Chelsea won the double (Premier League and League Cup).

Young, Consistent And Reliable , Do Arsenal Really Need Joel Campbell This Season?

By Ewah Chika.

When Joel Campbell was signed from Deportivo Saprissa in 2011, Arsenal fans did not take the signing serious until the youngster burst unto the scene at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, driving his team to the quarter-finals with his sublime performance after qualifying with Uruguay from a group which also comprised of England and Italy. It was highly believed at the time that the youngster will return to Arsenal after the tournament but such didn't happen as Campbell was sent on a fourth loan to Greek champions Olympiakos.

Can West Ham's Michail Antonio Repeat His Last Season's Exploits This Campaign?

By Ewah Chika.

Michail Antonio was an unknown figure in the Premier League when he joined Slaven Bilic's side for £7 million from Nottingham Forest after just one season at the City Ground. Fast forward to last week and the player received a call-up to the Three Lions after scoring two goals in his last three games in the league this season.

Greed Or Persistence: Why Did Yaya Toure Stay Back In Manchester City Despite Not Being Wanted?

By Ewah Chika.

Yaya Toure's best days in the Premier League might be behind him judging from reports emanating from Manchester. Toure has been the shinning light in Manchester City and also the club's most important player in  Premier League era considering his blistering form for the club since joining for £23 million from Barcelona in 2010. The Ivorian has scored a prolific 57 goals in 195 games in the league, winning the Premier League twice, League Cup twice and the FA Cup. The Ivorian  is also the scorer of the only goal in the FA Cup final against Stoke City in 2011 which was City's first major trophy in 35 years. It did not end there as Toure provided the assist for Pablo Zabaleta (Opening goal) in the 3-2 win (end of the season )  over Queens Park Rangers) which helped the club to win the league in 2012 (their first in 44 years). The former Monaco midfielder  was also named Manchester City's Player of the Year in 2014, also making the PFA Premier League Team of the Year twice (2011/2012 and 2013-2014).

Yet like always the case in football, all these records have little or no effect on the player's current plight at the club. Toure's problems started with the announcement of the appointment of Pep Guardiola by Manchester City in the winter, which Toure did not take kindly and this is because of the pairs fallout in Barcelona, which ended with the sale of midfielder to City in 2010. Toure had been a regular starter in Camp Nou in Guardiola's first season, winning the treble with the team before things fell apart  resulting in his reduced game time the next season before his eventual sale. There are various reports in the media about reasons for the pairs fallout but though none have come out openly to make it public, it seems non-footballing reasons might be the problem .

"Whenever I asked him something, he always gave strange answers. He pretty ignored me until City's offer came in.

"That's why I eventually opted to leave. I didn't speak to Guardiola for a year. He had no faith in me," Toure revealed at the time in 2013.

Sunderland's Poor Summer Transfer Edges Them Closer To Relegation.

By Ewah Chika.

While other clubs were busy recruiting numerous players in the transfer window , David Moyes and Sunderland left it late until the last day of the transfer window before attempting to sign a goalkeeper who will replace injured Vito Manonne. Though Sunderland's bid to sign Lorient's midfielder Didier Ndong for £13 million was successful the same cannot be said of the bid to sign goalkeeper Mika  and Norwich's Steven Naismith.

Asset Or Liability: Should Wayne Rooney Continue Starting For England ?

By Ewah Chika.

53 goals in 116 appearances is Wayne Rooney's record for England making him the country's record goalscorer and the most capped outfield player yet even such records aren't even enough to hide the striker's loss of form for the national team of recent.

Wayne Rooney has been the most talented and consistent English striker for years after bursting unto the scene during the European tournament in 2008,

Gohkan Inler Departs Leicester City A Flop After Arriving As A Coup Signing.

By Ewah Chika.

Leicester City fans might be forgiven for feeling as high as a G6 plane following the club's signing of then 31-year-old Gorkan Inler from Napoli for £5 million in 2015, which at the time was considered a bargain judging from the Swiss Captain's rich form over the years for the likes of FC Zurich, Udinese and Napoli.

Spanish Technique With An English Heart, Bournemouth Move Is Jack Wilshere's Sure Way To Regain Lost Form.

By Ewah Chika.

One of the breaking news of this summer's transfer deadline was the loan signing of Arsenal and Three Lions midfielder  Jack Wilshere by Bournemouth for £3 million. It can be said that Bournemouth have made a statement with Wilshere's signing considering the Englishman had more than 22 offers from different clubs on deadline day with the likes of Roma, AC Milan and Crystal Palace linked with him before he opted to move to the South Coast to link up with childhood friend Benik Afobe who was also formerly at Arsenal.

By his signing, Wilshere becomes the biggest signing in Bournemouth's history, even though Eddie Howie's side will part with £80,000 weekly for his wages. Once touted as the future of Arsenal, Wilshere's career has gone from grace to grass after his career threatening ankle injury in 2011 which made him miss the whole 2011/2012 season as a result of the injury.

"Jack Wilshere doesn't play the English way. I see Wilshere as the future of English football. If he had a career that had been injury-free we would already be talking about him as one of the top central midfield players in Europe,"

Ultra Defensive, Dull And Boring, Is West Brom The Right Club For Nacer Chadli?

By Ewah Chika.

"He's a top, top player and I'm delighted we've got him. I said last week that these signings had to be about players who would improve our squad and Nacer does precisely that ," were the words of Walsh man and West Bromwich Albion manager Tony Pulis upon signing Belgian and former Tottenham attacking midfielder Nacer Chadli for £13 million .

Chadli might have regressed in Spurs after exploding in the Premier League in 2013, having arrived as an unknown talent from Twente for £7 million.

Are Samir Nasri's Best Days Behind Him?

By Ewah Chika.

Can Marcos Alonso Fill The Void Left By Ashley Cole At The Bridge?

By Ewah Chika.

Antonio Conte's Chelsea might be flying high this season having beaten the likes of West Ham, Watford and Burnley, yet one thing clearly lacking in the team is the dearth of an attacking left-back since the exit of Ashley Cole in 2014. This is the reason Chelsea fans were elated with the news that Conte had signed Spanish and Fiorentina left-back Marcos Alonso Mendoza in the transfer window. The defender is deadly on set-piece, composed in attack with a top notch tackling and crossing ability coupled with his aerial presence. Marcos Alonso comes from a footballing family as the grandfather (Marcos Alonso Imaz) played eight years for Real Madrid, not excluding his father who played for both Atletico Madrid and Barcelona. The defender also came through the ranks at Real Madrid before departing for Bolton in 2010, scoring four league goals before signing for Fiorentina after the relegation of Bolton in 2013.

After Flopping In Liverpool And Milan: How Will Mario Balotelli Fare In Nice?

By Ewah Chika.

One of the most anticipated transfer news in the English Premier League this season was signing of former Liverpool and Azzurri forward Mario Balotelli on deadline day by Nice. The reason for this is not far fetched as the controversial striker did not fit in with Jurgen Klopp's system at the club.

Rejected In Manchester: Is Torino The Best Place For Joe Hart?

By Ewah Chika.

"Suddenly my career has undergone a change, and I took it as a sign of destiny and I had to do something.

"Italian goalkeeping is recognised throughout the world, so I am convinced I can still learn a lot here," were the words of Three Lions and former Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart upon signing on a season long with Sinisa Mihajlovic's Torino.

Considered not good enough with his feet and ball distribution, Hart found himself as third choice behind the likes of Chilean Raul Bravo who was signed from Barcelona and Argentine Willy Cabalero. Although Torino at present cannot be compared with Manchester City, Hart must be applauded for seeking a move that will progress his career instead of choosing to sulk at City and blame everyone else for his plight.

Last season, Torino ended up in Seria A's top half and are on course to improve judging from the appointment of Serbian and former Fiorentina and -AC Milan coach Sinisa Mihajlovic and also the signing of players like Hart, former  Roma and Fiorentina's attacking midfielder Adem Ljajic and Mirko Valdifiori from Napoli, although the Turin based side lost their two solid centre backs in Polish Glik (Monaco) and Serbian Nikola Maksimovic (Napoli).

Can Sofiane Boufal Take Southampton To Europe?

By Ewah Chika.

Claude Puel probably did not know his Southampton team lacked creativity when he was appointed in June until the Saints' first three games of the season against Watford, Manchester United and Sunderland gaining just two points.

Puel had made a terrible mistake in not signing a replacement for electric and creative attacking midfielder Saido Mane who was sold to Liverpool for £32 million. Though Southampton signed winger Nathan Redmond from Norwich, the English on present form no disrespect still has a lot of catching up to do to adequately replace the Senegalese.

Has Stoke City Struck Gold With Wilfred Bony Loan Signing?

By Ewah Chika.

"Bringing Wilfried Bony in was a no-barrier for us to be perfectly honest, because he knows the Premier League"

"He has power, speed and very good physical attributes which will undoubtedly help us (Stoke), and his technical and finishing skills are outstanding too," were the words of Stoke City manager Mark Hughes after the season loan signing of Ivorian and former Manchester City striker Wilfried Bony on Thursday.

That Bony's season long loan cost as little as £2 million makes it even more interesting considering his goal scoring records. Stoke City are one of the most difficult teams to play due to their defensive discipline yet the same cannot be said of their attack where the likes of Maman Biram Diouf , Peter Crouch, Jonathan Walters and the now departed Joselu have failed to deliver.

Meet Manchester City's New Left-Footed Midfielder: Leroy Sane.

By Ewah Chika.

It is not often that we see a player at a young age of 20, make more than 40 Bundesliga  appearances for a top club like Schalke 04 which is the third biggest and richest German club after rivals Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, but that is exactly the sort of stat that former Schalke 04 youngster Leroy Sane can boast of.

Already a German international having made the final 23 man squad to the Euro's in France though he did not see game time in the competition with the likes of Mesut Ozil, Thomas Muller, Joshua Kimmich and Andre Schurlle all ranked ahead of him, Sane is the most rated German young player in the  Bundesliga together with Bayern Munich's Josh Kimmich at the moment . This is the reason it wasn't  surprising that Pep Guardiola and Manchester City have pursued him all summer and finally signed him for £37 million on Tuesday. Under Guardiola, Sane is expected to make the attacking right forward his position judging from the records of the Spaniard coach  who has not only improved left-attacking forwards who play in the right side of attack but also made then flourish and become world beaters with the likes of Lionel Messi in Barcelona  and Arjen Robben in Bayern Munich.

Can Jakub Blaszczykowski "Kuba" Change The Fortunes Of Wolfsburg This Season.

By Ewah Chika.

Wolfsburg shocked many fans of the German Bundesliga on Monday when it announced the signing of Polish and former Borussia Dortmund's attacking midfielder Jakub Blaszczykowski for a fee of €5 million . The 30-year-old is likely to replace German international Andre Schurlle who moved the other way to Dortmund a fortnight ago.

"Jakub Blaszczykowski is a player that can do any team good- not just due to his footballing qualities, but also because he is a prime example of determination, willingness and passion, who always identified with his clubs to 100 per cent," was the statement by Klaus Allofs who is the Sporting Director of Wolfsburg.

Kuba as he is fondly called has won two German Bundesliga titles with Dortmund before he was moved on to Fiorentina on loan after coach Thomas Tuchel deemed him surplus to requirements at the club last season. The attacking midfielder's favourite position is the right midfield in a 4-4-2 formation or in the forward right position in a 4-3-3 formation. Kuba's time in Dortmund was

Very few people knew 19-year-old Bartosz Kaputska before the Euro's in the summer but soon after Euro's the KSC Cracovia (oldest Polish club) attacking midfielder became a household name even though  his native Poland crashed out on penalties in the quarter-final to eventual winners Portugal.

Why The 2016/2017 Season Represents A Make Or Break Season For Ruben Loftus-Cheek At Chelsea.

By Ewah Chika.

Chelsea Football Club might be the most successful English club judging from post-2003 which is also the year Russian billionaire Roman Abramovic bought the club. Yet one thing that the club lacks is their inability to produce their own stars (home growth talent). Boasting one of the most successful academy in England that has won the Youth Champions League more than once, Youth FA Cup and Youth League, it is appalling that no player from the club's academy has been successful in the first team since Roman Abramovich bought the club. John a Terry still remains the last Chelsea academy graduate to play consistently for the first team since making his debut on 28 October 1998 in the League Cup against Aston Villa. As Chelsea continues to enjoy one success or the other, academy stars such as Ryan Betrand (Southampton) and

Can Antonie Conte Get The Best Out Of Serbian Nemanja Matic?

By Ewah Chika.

Nemanja Matic might have had the worst season of his professional career in Chelsea last season,
but even as his place in the team looks less likely considering the signing of N'Golo Kante from Leicester City for £30 million, Matic has made it publicly clear he is staying at the club to fight for his place in the team this season.

"I am sure that 100,000 players want to come to play for Chelsea so there is always competition, all life is a fight so every player is ready for that ," were the words of the Serbian on Wednesday while with the team for pre-season in the US.

The debate over the future of Matic is coming considering the highly anticipated playing style and formation of Italian manager Antonie Conte who plans on playing a 4-2-4 formation in Chelsea this season which puts the future of the Serbian in doubt considering Kante is the defensive midfielder

Is Alex Song Another One Who Failed To Fulfil His Talent ?

By Ewah Chika.

Alexandre Dimitri Song Billong might be 28 which is the age most footballers hit their peak but that cannot be said of the defensive midfielder who appears to have regressed since moving to Barcelona four years ago from Arsenal for £15 million. It is laughable that the player who recently joined Rubin Kazan on loan on Monday has a £63 million release clause in his contract with Barcelona which shows the high expectation Barcelona had before signing him.

"I'm very happy to come here and be a part of the project being built in Kazan.

"The club hopes to establish itself as the biggest team in Russian football in the next four years and I hope to make a great impact towards that," Song told the club's official TV channel after signing on loan on Monday .

No disrespect for Rubin Kazan but it is disheartening that Song at this point in his career will not only be trying to revive his career in the Russian league but also in Rubin Kazan. Rubin do not even at present belong to one of the top clubs in Russia as only the likes of CSKA Moscow and Zenith Saint Petersburg are the only two that have that European recognition.

The Cameroonian began his career in French Ligue 1 club Bastia before moving to Arsenal on loan in

The Welsh Xavi: Will Stoke City See The Best Of Joe Allen ?

By Ewah Chika.

Stoke City is one Premier League club that is surprising quiet in the current transfer window . With the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and Bournemouth having made more than three signings already,  Mark Hughes' side had only signed unknown Egyptian winger Ramadan Sobhi from Al Alhy in Egypt.

This is the reason the signing of former Liverpool Welsh central midfielder Joe Allen for £13 million on a five year deal on Monday didn't come as a surprise. Allen was tipped for the big stage during his time in Swansea with Brendan Rodgers before his plummeting during his time at Liverpool under both Brendan Rodgers and Jurgen Klopp.

"I was really excited as soon as I heard of the club's (Stoke ) interest and It wasn't a difficult decision for me to make. I am incredibly excited about my future here at Stoke City," Allen said after signing for the club .

Allen is an early developer after making his professional debut aged 16 in January 2007 for Swansea in League One. The midfielder shined in his debut season in the Premier League which was the reason he was signed for £15 million by Liverpool in 2012.

The signing of the midfielder is a good move for Stoke who under Hughes (appointed in 2013) seem to be punching above their height finishing in the top half of the table for two years successively. Hughes has also being credited with the changing of the club's long-ball playing style which was the style of Tony Pulis. Stoke now play with flair as the likes of

With constant debates on the formation that current Chelsea manager Antonio Conte will utilise in Chelsea, it is interesting to know that this argument is uncalled for and unnecessary.

Conte is known for his high pressing energy game plan based on a 3-5-2 formation with wing backs performing both attacking and defensive duties. Conte was so successful with the formation that he won three successive Seria A titles with Juventus using the 3-5-2 formation, as if that wasn't enough

At 29, Is Nolito What Manchester City Really Need At Present?

By Ewah Chika.

As Manchester City fans jubilate over the signing of Spanish attacker Nolito, it remains to be seen if his signing for £14 million from Celta Vigo is the right one.

The Spaniard reunites with Pep Guardiola who is the man who handed him his Barcelona debut in 2010 after joining the Barcelona B-team in 2008 . Nolito would later go on loan to Benfica in 2011 after growing frustrated with game time in Barcelona ( played only two league games in one year) before joining Celta Vigo in 2013. Though last season was his best as he scored 12 goals providing a further seven assists in 27 league games, the Spaniard ended up scoring 39 goals in 103 League

By Ewah Chika.

Dino Melaye is not only the number supporter of Senate President Bukola Saraki after seconding the motion for Saraki's nomination as Senate President, he is also the most controversial senator in the present dispensation. It is shocking that despite his appalling and irresponsible records such a man continues to parade himself as a senator and representative of his constituency . This clearly shows

World Class But Injury Prone, Will Ilkay Gundogan Flop In Manchester City?

By Ewah Chika.

Manchester City nearly lost out on a Champions League place with inconsistency trailing the Citizens. Man City conceeded so many goals and thus lost ground in the title chase. This is why it wasn't shocking that City were linked with nearly every top central midfielder in the world as the likes of Yaya Toure, Fernando and Fernandinho were a shadow of themselves all through last season. At the end City announced the signing of German and Borussia Dortmund defensive/attacking midfielder Ilkay Gundogan for £21 million. This was not the first time the former Nurnberg midfielder was linked with Man City but this was surely the last as he signed a four year contract.

Though rated as one of the best in his position considering his talent and technique, the question is Can Man City cope with the player'a consistent injury woes of recent . Not only was the midfielder on clutches when signed but he was also injured for all of 2013/2014 Bundesliga games except for three due to a persistent back injury which made him miss out on the German team for the FIFA World Cup in Brazil in 2014. Gundogan missed a whole a year of football and ever since hasn't recovered fully suffering a succession of injuries including abductor, hamstrings , pelvis , feet, ankles, shins and how dislocated knee which ruled him out again last season until September after which he managed 25 Bundesliga games scoring a lone goal and providing three assists. He also played six Europa League games recording one assist.

Though a first class player who was on top of his game in the 2012/2013 , the Gelsenkirchen born player was the icing of BVB as the won the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and reaching the final of the Champions League before losing to Bayern Munich. This was the height of the Turkish born player as he has struggled to regain that form. Gundogan is a player who is good in dribbling , holder of the ball, concentration and loves to tackle , however he will have to improve on his aerial duel and poor tackling to succeed in a team managed by possession obsessed Pep Guardiola.

BVB have made a huge profit on a player who the signed from Nurnberg in 2011 for €4 million and sold for £21 million to Man City. At present he won't be missed in Ruhr as Julian Weigl and Sebastian Rode will seamlessly step into his shoes.

Finally the signing of Gundogan by Man City is considered a foolish one or a Masterstroke by other until the season starts.

By Ewah Chika.

With the exit of Ilkay Gundogan to Manchester City for £21 million, Borussia Dortmund fans would be expected to be moody and saddened but this is not the case and one reason for that is the form of 20-year-old former 1980 Munich captain Julian Weigl who was a revelation last two seasons in the German League as his team suffered relegation .

By Ewah Chika.

Two Bundesliga titles and one DFB-Pokal trophy are what Serbian Neven Subotic have won during his time in Rhur. Stephane El-Shaarawy: How AC Milan's Loss Has Turned To AS Roma's Gain.

By Ewah Chika.

After scoring against his parent club  AC Milan in Seria A last season while on loan with AS Roma, Stephan Karim El-Shaarawy had this to say, "It was a whirlwind of strong emotions for me. It's been a very special night coming back to San Siro, scoring in front of the Curva Sud where I scored my first Seria A goal, getting a round of applause when I came off.

"It was a unique and unforgettable night and I have to thank the Milan fans, as they cheered me even when I was substituted. I'm delighted," he concluded.

As if that wasn't enough, it didn't take long before Roma announced the signing of the 23-year-old for €13 million on a four year deal after impressing on loan last season which represents a loss of €6 million considering he was signed for €20 million from Genoa in 2011 by AC Milan. AC Milan fans will feel bad partly due to the fact that the Italian player is a fan favourite and one whose talent is unquestionable. El-Shaarawy was signed in 2011 for €20 million from Genoa after impressing on loan in Padova scoring nine goals in 29 Seria B games which qualified the team for the Seria A playoff. While in Milan, the player was nicknamed "Young Pharoah" by the fans as his pace, work-ethic, technical skill and ball control were all joy to behold.  El-Shaarawy joined a Milan team in decline as the club struggled to compete with big teams and financial resources selling their best players Thiago Silva and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to PSG and replacing them with average players. In his second season (2012/2013) he was the light of the team and was the star player scoring 19 goals in 49 games in all competitions . This is still his best season to date even though he struggled in the second half of the season after the signing of Mario Balotelli from Manchester City. One of the reason for El-Shaarawy's loss of form is the fact that Balotelli became a vocal point of Milan's attack, as Maximiliano Allegri's tactical game plan changed which favoured the former Manchester City man, shifting El-Shaarawy to the wing burdening him with defensive contributions which is not one of his strengths .

With a flair like that of South American, El-Shaarawy might have struggled with pressure and expectations as he gradually lost form before the season ended. If 2012/2013 season was his breakthrough season, 2013/2014 season turned out a disaster for him as he struggled with injuries and match fitness for two years before the club decided to send him on loan to Monaco last season. It was at Monaco that the Egyptian lost his love for the game as he only played only 15 Ligue 1 games scoring no goal . This was the reason why he was sent on a second loan to Roma last season after Luciano Spalletti took over the club from Luis Garcia and requested for his signing.

In total El-Shaarawy played 82 Seria A games for Milan scoring 21 goals . With the signing of El-Shaarawy , Roma have upgraded and can now compete with the big boys In Seria A provided the sign players who will supply the key passes that the striker will convert . AC Milan might feel it was better to sell the player considering his recent struggles and form of Carlos Bacca but one thing that should be noted is that if given more time and patience El-Shaarawy would have been a monumental success at the club.
