Bukola Saraki is not a rookie in Nigerian politics. The medical doctor turned politician was born into the aristocrat home of "Olusola Saraki " and he hasn't looked back since then.
Having won the Senate Presidential elections
though in controversial circumstances, Saraki has not known peace ever since that day . Like the proverbial head that wears the crown , Saraki is unease and restless. The recent judgement by the Supreme Court on Friday which dismissed his appeal to stop the Code of Conduct Tribunal from trying him for alleged corruption . This was far from the wishes and political calculations of Saraki as him and his many supporters who trooped to court to hear the verdict where shattered to the bones when judgement was delivered .
What this means is that Saraki must subject himself to the Code of Conduct Tribunal for further questioning . This is the worst thing Saraki feared as he was humiliated and forced to sit in the dock on different occasions during his trial .
The Senate President is currently facing a 13-count charge of alleged false declaration of assets and maintenance of a foreign account while governor of Kwara State.
The problem is that instead of concentrating all his forces and resources to prove his innocence at the tribunal, Saraki has instead spent them trying to act like a victim and even saying his trial was politically motivated . Mr Saraki had not yet being found guilt by the tribunal , but his actions betrayed him and made him look like one who had so much to hide. The purpose of this writing isn't to determine if Saraki is politically attacked or not but rather to point out that Saraki has not come out out to put up any defence on the charges against him, rather he spends his time trying to decipher if the tribunal is competent enough to try him or not. Mr Saraki is not alone as his wife (Toyin) has been invited severally by the EFCC on allegations of corruption . While Nigeria are not alien to corruption, this is the first time a couple are tried by two different government agencies for different corruption charges. Normally it is either the EFCC or ICPC charging a couple to court but never have we witnessed where they EFCC and Code of Conduct Tribunal have done that .
There is no denying the fact , Saraki's trial might have political intrigues linked to it as he has stepped on so many toes in the build up to his senate presidency . It is possible these people might be out to hang and dry him with 2019 elections in mind , which Saraki is rumoured to be eyeing. It is a big coincidence that his trial was brought forward immediately he became the senate president . Why was Saraki never charged all these years while he was a senator ? Why did it happen at the very moment he assumed the post without the blessings of the president , political party and colleagues. Saraki might have been granted a time of recess by his party so he could confirm the presidents ministerial nominees, and he joined ranks with the APC at the expense of his former party and the party whose vote brought him to Power (PDP). Saraki must answer the charges against him either way even if his trial is politically motivated. This doesn't matter to the man on the street as all "Nigerian Politicians are an ideal brand for corruption " hence can't be trusted. Nigerians deserve justice and Saraki must be tried and judgement passed on him. All through this period Saraki has exhibited the attitude of a desperate man and whose lust for power knows no bounds.
A Daniel has come to judgement and Mr Saraki has no option but to go back to the same tribunal he once abused , criticised and looked down on .
