No player generated as much news and controversy during the last minutes to the transfer deadline(2015/2016) like Spanish and Manchester United's goal keeper David De Gea Quintana. It has been a show of shame and war of words between football biggest Giants,
Real Madrid and Manchester United, with each trading blames on why the other club is the Villian for the failed transfer. Since a few weeks to last season, it has been clear to all football fans that De Gea wanted to quit English Football and move to Real Madrid. This became clearer when he rejected the offer of an extension to his one year remaining contract at Old Trafford. De Gea's heart had already left for the Spanish Capital, though his body was present in the North West of England (Manchester) before the end of the season.
What bothers the fans of this amiable goal keeper is that, though he can easily sit out one year of his contract, this could have severe consequences on his career with the Euro 2016 tournament in France next season. It is no longer secret that current La Roja number one (Ikay Casillas) is clearly on the decline and his move to FC Porto of Portugal amplifies that. Therefore, there is no better time for De Gea to stake his claim for the number one goal keeper position of the European Champions than now. The problem therefore is that If he refuses to sign another contract with United as he did season end, he could find himself with the reserves and not play regular football, as the club's of punishing him for rebuffing their advances. If he then decides to sign an extension , that puts him in a worse situation, because it means he might never fulfil his ambition of turning out for the 10 times European Champions. This is because, United will only have more power and influence on where he plays afterwards. This leaves the Madrid born goalkeeper in a dicey and precarious situation.
It should be noted that at 24 years , De Gea is still very young for an infield player, as goalkeepers only get better with age and experience, but what we shouldn't deny is that in football sometimes, it's best to take opportunities as the come, as they might never come back again.
Real Madrid had all the time to sign the goal keeper all summer and it is only their fault that the transfer saga dragged so long. While Real Madrid and Manchester United flexed their various muscles and negotiation prowess with the transfer of David De Gea, the young goal keeper is hence the casualty and victim of this war of the "Titans of Football".
De Gea has paid his dues in United and although he was shaky in his first season (2011) after a £17.8 million move from Athletico Madrid. He has won the English Premier League on two occasions 2011 and 2013, which is no mean feat for any goal keeper. Also he was Manchester United's best player last season and by far was the best Goal Keeper in the League last season , maybe that's the reason United desperately held onto him all summer.
Returning to Madrid once seemed so close and a reality to De Gea, but going by recent events it might be an opportunity that may never return as Real Madrid looks more likely a "Mirage".
What ever decision De Gea takes this season (sitting out his contract or extending ) may make or mar him, because each carries grave consequences (sit out your contract and play for reserves and don't play in Euro or extend and play in Euro but never move to Real Madrid and remain a Manchester United player for the meantime). This sure looks a "Trying Time" for the young Champion but his fans pray he makes the best decision as he is yet to get to his peak
