Nigerian Police Breeding Anarchy in Rivers State

It was shocking to hear the least that the police at the Rivers State INEC headquarters in Port Hacourt teargassed and forcefully drove out the APC Gubernatorial Candidate, Dr Dakuku Peterside with several party heavyweights like Senator Magnus Abe.
This is disgraceful to say the least that this could happen in this time and age.

Dr Peterside had gone to the INEC office to inspect the electoral materials used for the April 11 elections, which the court has granted his request to inspect. When did the police turn to agents obstructing justice and abetting crime , which they have done by denying him access to the materials. The Nigerian Police should learn to obey the rule of law, which the executive cannot even dare to disobey in this present dispensation. It is still unclear whose directive the Nigerian Police was obeying but it should be noted that the Rivers State Governor Barr Nyesom Wike who is the chief security officer of the state and collects billions of naira each year from the federal government should be held responsible. The said governor is at loggerheads with Dakuku and his political mentor Rotimi Ameachi and lost his appeal against the inspection of the materials by Dakuku. While it is too early to accuse Wike, it is his responsibility as the chief guardian of the state to make sure such things never happen in Rivers State  while he is on seat, irrespective of their different political affiliations .

This is anti-democracy and should be severely condemned by all.  How can the police resort to the use of harmful materials and substances to prevent individuals from exercising their legal rights?  If the police are against these individuals, the law court is always open for deliberations. Is Dr Dakuku a criminal and even if he is a criminal, why wasn't he arrested and taken in for questioning? The police cannot continue treating the same citizens who they swore to protect with laxity and disdain.

The problem is that while people fail to condemn such acts based on their disdain for the victims or differences in political ideologies, such acts will only progress and degenerate into more violent and dreadful outcomes with time. This is what was obtainable during the time of President Olusegun Obasanjo, when the rule of law was not respected and police was used to intimate political opponents. This led to anarchy as there was several assassinations and murder of public figures in the country.  If this continues, under Wike's watchful eyes as governor then it is time for him to be disgraced out of office as he would have turned to a Dictator in a democratic government.

The perpetrators of such acts in the Nigerian Police should be severely sanctioned and punished to set example for aspiring perpetrators and protect the good image of the police. Time to act is now, let the run of law be adhered to.
