When Olisa Metuh was busy running his mouth loud and granting press conferences while Nigerians were been shackled by the difficult and nail bitting economic hardship in the last administration, it did not occur to the Anambra state lawyer that his corrupt practices might soon be brought to light.
It did not take long before his evil plans would be exposed as the PDP National Publicity Secretary was fingered in the corruption mess that engulfed the previous administration . Metuh was mentioned to have shared in the looted $2 billion set aside for arms procurement for the Boko Haram ravaged North East region. The said fund was lodged with the National Security Adviser Col. Sambo Dasuki (Rtd) whose office is in not in the Nigerian constitution . Metuh was also reported to have eaten up his earlier statement which indicated him and hence it was discovered he tried to destroy the evidence.
Though the politician was released and granted bail on January 19 after spending weeks in jail, his latest plot to have his seized passport returned to him in order to seek medical help in the UK was today rejected by Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Justice Abang rejected the appeal arguing that the court lacked the jurisdiction to order the release of his passport having earlier directed that it should be deposited with the Chief Registrar of the Court throughout the period of his ongoing trial.
Metuh had claimed to have had an accident during his party's meeting and even vomiting in his car en-route to the court room last week .
It is worthy of mention to commend the judiciary for taking this decision which is rare in Nigerian judicial system as many suspected corrupt public officiers have obtained court judgements that have favoured their decisions to move abroad and abscond in the pretence of seeking medical help.
Metuh must stand and clear his name which has been rubbed in the mood. While poor Nigerians cannot even afford funds to visit general hospitals in their places.
Metuh has suddenly gone quiet since his arrest which might be a sign of him trying to play by the rules in order to avoid prosecution . Justice must be served irrespective of who is involved and the era of jetting off abroad to avoid prosecution after indulging in corrupt practices has come to an end. A Daniel has come to judgement .
